A shooting has left one dead at what is being called dueling protests at Denver’s Civic Center, where people had gathered for a “Patriot Rally” to counter-protest a Black Lives Matter “soup drive.”
A private security guard is being held as a suspect in deadly shooting, according to the Denver Police Department (DPD).
Matthew Dolloff, 30, is being held at the Denver Downtown Detention Center to investigate first-degree murder. He is being held without bond. 9NEWS stated that it had retained Dolloff as a private security contractor. They had begun using private security in recent months while covering protests to make sure their staff was protected in the event something went wrong.
Joe Montoya, Denver Police spokesperson, said on Saturday, a verbal altercation occurred between the victim, who has been identified by his son as Lee Keltner and Dolloff. The altercation occurred as the protests were winding down. A Denver Post photographer captured photos of the confrontation. It shows a man spraying something that appears to be mace at another man with a handgun that he had drawn in that direction.
Investigators are still trying to undercover what happened to cause the deadly shooting. Video footage and the photos of the shooting are being reviewed. Montoya said,
We don’t want any erroneous information going out, any speculation, because that’s really what hurts us, and that’s what gets everybody angry and motivated to commit more violence, and that’s what we’re trying to prevent.
The incident was captured by The Denver Post photographer Helen H. Richardson.
