North Carolina is a well-known Tobacco state and one of the last to join the conversation of legalizing marijuana. Democrats in North Carolina General Assembly want to change the marijuana laws in the state, and they are now proposing several options to the Republicans.
Two new marijuana bills were filed Wednesday in the Senate. The first bill would legalize medical marijuana, which most states have already done. The second bill would fully legalize weed including recreational use, which 15 other states have already done.
“WE WANT TO LEAVE NO STONE UNTURNED”, said SEN. WILEY NICKEL, A CARY DEMOCRAT, WHO IS A SPONSOR OR CO-SPONSOR OF BOTH BILLS. “I THINK IN STATES THAT HAVE MOVED FOWARD, THERE’S USUALLY MORE SUPPORT FOR MEDICAL. I THINK THAT’S PROBABLY THE FIRST STEP FOR NORTH CAROLINA. ALTHOUGH I PERSONALLY SUPPORT FULL LEGALIZATION”
The majority of North Carolinians are in favor of legalizing weed, although medical marijuana is more favored over full legalization according to the polls.
“I suspect there may be some willingness to give the medical marijuana bill a hearing, and maybe even pass it this session”, said Sen, Jay Chaudhuri, a Raleigh democrat. “I think there are now 37 states that have passed this”
While they are working towards legalizing weed there is also a conversation about decriminalization as well. Prior to Wednesday, Democrats had also filed bills to decriminalize marijuana or create more diversion programs as an alternative court. So pretty much if you are caught with a small amount of weed you will get a civil fine, like a traffic ticket, and no criminal charges.
