Jerry Falwell Jr. has officially resigned as president and chancellor of Liberty University. It comes after reports reveal Falwell and his wife had participated in a sexual relationship with a Miami man named Giancarlo Granda.
The University, one of the largest evangelical Christian universities in the world, was founded by his late father Jerry Falwell Sr in 1971, who remained the president until 2007. On Monday, Falwell Jr had agreed to resign but then withdrew his resignation later that day. Falwell has been one of the most known evangelicals. He is also a vocal supporter of President Donald Trump.
Falwell Jr started controversy when the country was urging people to shelter in place, he invited 5,000 students to return to campus, and defy CDC recommendations for mandatory school closures.
Giancarlo Granda went public with allegations that he was involved in sexual activities with the Falwells from 2012 until as recent 2019. According to CNN, Granda said that Falwell Jr frequently looked on while Granda had sex with Falwell’s wife, Becki.
Falwell Jr, released a statement to the Washington Examiner before the information was made public. In the statement that was released on Sunday, claimed Granda was trying to blackmail him and his wife. Granda denies the charge. He also said,
Becki had an inappropriate personal relationship with this person, something in which I was not involved.
