Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) signed into law a bill that requires new restrictive rules on mail in voting. This includes stricter voter ID requirements for voting by mail.  Some of the additional provisions of the bill include creating limits on who can pick up and return a voter’s ballot and banning private funding for elections. Democrats are worried that this could suppress voter turnout, especially for people of color.

Local media and national media were not allowed to go into the event as it was announced to be a Fox News exclusive. He signed the bill on an appearance on “Fox and Friends.” He stated after signing the bill,

Me signing this bill says: Florida, your vote counts, your vote is going to be cast with integrity and transparency and this is a great place for democracy.

Florida Republican-controlled state House and Senate approved SB90 with party-line votes the day before the final day of the legislative session. This bill is part of a Republican-led effort nationwide to restrict voting access at the state level due to the disappointment in November’s elections.
