Steve Hortz, a 12-year veteran of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, was arrested Thursday and charged with burglary. Hortz went to the home on July 20 after police received a report about a man in his 70s who died of natural causes. Sheriff’s department officials said he returned to the home a total of 3 times between late July and mid-August. During this time, he removed several items from the unoccupied home.

There is a security video of the footage that shows Hortz entering the home through an unlocked door and removing items.

Sheriff Don Barnes said at a news conference,

Deputy Hotrz returned to that residence in the early morning hours, gained entrance to the residence through the unlocked door, and was seen on recordings removing items from the residence.

An attorney for the deceased man’s estate contacted the department to report the items stolen and to provide the home security video of the theft.
