Well if you had planned on throwing a huge party using an Airbnb, I have bad news for you. Airbnb has banned the ability to throw house parties and events worldwide.
The company has changed its limits to 16 occupants max. This policy is targeted at larger properties that can accommodate more than 16 people.
Airbnb said the policy change comes after the customers have taken ‘bar and club behavior’ into rented Airbnb properties during the pandemic.
In many large jurisdictions, public health mandates on gatherings have changed – and in some places swung back and forth in response to the changing rates of COVID cases – as have regulations on bars, clubs and pubs. Some have chosen to take bar and club behavior to homes, sometimes rented through our platform.
We think such conduct is incredibly irresponsible – we do not want that type of business, and anyone engaged in or allowing that behavior does not belong on our platform.
Airbnb said parties have been prohibited from listings. However, the company allowed hosts to use their best judgment and authorize small parties like baby showers or birthday parties if hosts felt it was appropriate for their home and neighborhood.
Once COVID-19 started and social distancing was inforced, the company removed “event-friendly” from its filter options and “parties and events allowed” from hosts that listed this in properties House Rules.
According to Airbnb, 73 percent of listings globally already ban parties in their House Rules. It said the policy change is in the best interest of public health, and hosts’ neighbors.
Airbnb said it’s working to inform users of the policy change. The company said it’s also implementing consequences for hosts and guests who violate the policy –including taking legal action.
