11-year-old girl Nevaeh Thomas, was playing with her friends outside near her apartment on Friday night. A 12-year-old boy, who has not been identified, started to harass her verbally. According to reports, he called her several racial slurs. Thomas reportedly decided to defend her stance by stating to the young boy that
My Black is beautiful.
The suspect then allegedly knocked her unconscious with a pole. Thomas’ mother Brandi Stewart told FOX4KC her daughter,
Suffered from a concussion. She has stitches inside and outside of her cheek. She lost her tooth. Her feelings are more hurt because of the act of, the racial act. Not so much of the scaring.
District Attorney Steve Howe did confirm that the 12-year-old boy will is being charged with felony aggravated battery. Additional hate crime charges might also be brought against the 12-year-old.
Pastor Terry Bradshaw of the Empowerment Temple had some thoughts on why this occurred in the community.
Hate speech has become the norm. Violence has become the norm. It’s seeped into our children.
Family attorney LaRhonna Lassiter Saunder asked that people show compassion for Thomas and remember that she is the victim of this attack.
How about showing a little empathy. Regardless of the race of these kids, as a parent, if my child was injured in this manner, I’m not sure how I would handle this.
